what we offer
grievance remediation
At appellando, we provide a comprehensive global framework and rules of procedure for grievance remediation, aimed at enhancing human rights and environmental risks within supply chains. Our platform enables individuals to report grievances in an anonymous, confidential, transparent, trustworthy manner to our network of competent helpline partners, ensuring their identity remains protected.
We offer a structured process to handle grievances locally for swift and effective remediation, benefiting both individuals and businesses. Our OGM helplines act as independent consultants, facilitating conflict resolution with local experts and NGOs. If the issue cannot be resolved locally, it can be escalated to involve individual customers of the producers for further review and action. Buyers must stay engaged in escalated cases.
For cases that may result from potentially systemic issues, we facilitate and endorse national multi-stakeholder dialogues to identify root causes and work towards improving the situations.
Our framework adheres to the principles of the UN, ILO, and OECD, as well as national legislation, without exceeding regulatory requirements.
By participating in the appellando grievance mechanism system, producer/producer groups and packhouses in their role as employers and economic enterprises demonstrate their supply chain due diligence and ensure that the perspectives of all stakeholders, including vulnerable groups, are considered.
what we offer
grievance
reporting
Buyers receive regular exclusive reports about the participation status in their supply chains. They can map their supply chains and monitor the adoption rate of appellando among their supply base. appellando’s identification and registration infrastructure includes all system participants.
Buyers also receive qualified reports containing information required to fulfil the statutory reporting obligations of the LkSG (German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act) and CSDDD (Corporate Due Diligence Directive). These reports adhere to a communication standard for reporting and aggregating grievance cases, allowing companies to report their due diligence activities related to supply chain grievance mechanisms. This is all conducted in compliance with applicable data protection rules.
In line with the appellando Rules of Procedure, all reports do not contain any personal data and are anonymized to prevent identification of the parties involved, except, when necessary, under specific remedy levels.
what we offer
a way to dignified supply chains
With our alliance partners we embark on a new and holistic path to dignify their supply chains. Discover the concept, core principles, implementation strategies, benefits, challenges, and a consideration that describe the direction and new concept of the journey.
The concept – respecting human rights and the environment
Dignified supply chains are a new holistic approach towards sustainable supply chains, aiming at ensuring that human rights and environmental protection are respected and upheld throughout the entire supply chain, following a dialogue with all involved stakeholders on equal level.
This concept extends beyond mere compliance with regulatory and legal requirements and certifications. It embodies the commitment to ethical practices and social responsibility, recognizing the DIGNITY of everyone involved. It recognizes that the impact of business activities on people and the planet is profound and necessitates a conscientious effort to foster dignity and respect at every stage of the supply chain.
The core principle – human rights protection
At the heart of dignified supply chains is the unwavering commitment to human rights. This includes safeguarding the rights of workers, ensuring fair labor practices, and protecting vulnerable groups from exploitation and abuse.
Companies must be vigilant in identifying and addressing human rights violations directly toe vulnerable groups, whether they are related to forced labor, child labor, discrimination, or unsafe working conditions. By embedding human rights principles into their operations, businesses contribute to the well-being and empowerment of individuals and communities.
The core principle – environmental stewardship
Dignified supply chains also entails a profound respect for the environment. Companies must strive to minimize negative impacts on the environment by adopting sustainable practices. This includes the responsible procurement of raw materials, resource conservation in the handling of chemicals and their safe disposal, efficient waste management and the competent use of water.
By prioritizing environmental stewardship, treating the environment with dignity, businesses not only contribute to the health of the planet but also align themselves with the growing expectations of consumers and stakeholders who value sustainability.
The implementation strategy – multi-stakeholder collaboration
Achieving dignified supply chains requires true collaboration among diverse stakeholders. This involves engaging with suppliers, workers, non-governmental organizations, governments, and local communities to develop comprehensive and effective solutions.
Multi-stakeholder frameworks provide a platform for dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and joint action. By working together, stakeholders can harmonize grievance mechanisms, share best practices, and drive systemic change that benefits all parties involved.
The implementation strategy – grievance mechanisms
A crucial aspect of dignified supply chains is the establishment of robust grievance mechanisms. These mechanisms enable individuals and communities to raise concerns and seek for remediations for any human rights violations or environmental risk.
Effective grievance mechanisms must be easily accessible and transparent. They should provide a trustworthy and confidential space for individuals to claim their grievances without fear of retaliation. By addressing issues promptly and fairly, companies demonstrate their commitment to accountability and mindfulness.
The benefit – enhanced reputation
Companies that prioritize a dignified design of their supply chains gain a positive reputation among consumers, investors, and other stakeholders. Ethical practices and a commitment to social responsibility resonate with the public, leading to increased trust and loyalty. A strong reputation for integrity and sustainability can also attract top talent and foster long-term business partnerships.
The benefit – risk mitigation
By proactively addressing human rights and environmental risks, businesses can mitigate potential legal, financial, and reputational risks. Dignified supply chains involve identifying vulnerabilities and implementing measures to prevent or address them. This proactive approach not only protects the company from potential liabilities but also contributes to a more stable and resilient supply chain.
The benefit – positive social and environmental impact
The goal of dignified supply chains is to create a positive social and environmental impact. By respecting human rights and protecting the environment, companies contribute to the well-being of individuals, communities and nature. This leads to improved livelihoods, better working conditions, and a healthier planet. The ripple effect of these positive changes extends beyond the supply chain, fostering a more just and sustainable world.
The challenge – complexity of global supply chains
One of the significant challenges in dignifying supply chains is the complexity of global supply networks. They often span multiple countries and involve numerous intermediaries, making it challenging to monitor and enforce ethical practices consistently. Companies must invest in robust traceability systems and leverage technology to gain visibility into their supply chains and ensure compliance with standards and enabling the appropriate dialogue with all stakeholders, including vulnerable groups.
The consideration – continuous improvement
Making supply chains with dignity is not a one-time effort but an ongoing journey of continuous improvement. Companies must regularly assess their practices, identify areas for enhancement, and adapt to evolving standards and expectations. Engaging in regular audits, seeking feedback from stakeholders, and staying informed about emerging trends and best practices are essential for maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of sustainable supply chains.
dignified supply chains
in conclusion
Dignified supply chain design is a comprehensive approach that prioritizes the protection of human rights and the environment.
It requires collaboration, robust grievance mechanisms, and a commitment to continuous improvement. By embracing these principles, companies can enhance their reputation, mitigate risks, and create a positive social and environmental impact. Ultimately, this contributes to a more just, sustainable, and equitable world.
